Shantala - Heather & Benjy Wertheimer are two of my best friends. They are also AMAZING musicians. Benjy was a founder and long-term member of Ancient Future, a pioneering world-beat music group. He is a life long student of the Northern Classical music tradition of India. Heather was working as a singer songwriter and yoga instructor when she and I met more than 10 years ago. When Heather and Benjy met... MAGIC happend. The music they create together is simply out of this world.
The Kirtan tradition is one of group singing and community. People gather and participate in a call and response singing session. But that some how does not really explain it. It is an amazing musical experience though. Singing is mostly in Sandskrit. Some english. And when we perform together, Heather and Benjy and I usually bring in some Greek, Hebrew and occasionally other chanting languages and traditions.
You can really feel the spirit move when these folks take the stage, and it is my immense pleasure to share a concert with them. Not your usual Joe Jencks show! And well worth the effort to attend! A once in a lifetime musical experience.
