AMAZING. I got about 20 shots of this fellow. His attitude was so solemn and earnest and reverent. I was deeply moved.

Sunday morning we sang the names of the Dead and Disappeared for 3 hours while the 27,000 assembled protesters placed crosses on the gates of the fort and sang "Presente!" after each name was sung. What an amazing witness for peace!

The Puppetistas Reinact the El Mazote Massacre

The Puppetistas are one of the AMAZING performance arts of this protest. They build these huge puppets and reinact various events from the recent past in Central America. Surreal, larger than life, as if Maurice Sendak had taken to radical leftist protest. I think he did... but that is another story.

27,000 Gather in Memorium

So the police and military always say it's about 10,000 that gather every year... but I heard from reliable sources that it is frequently in the neighborhood of 25-30,000. Last year's estimate was around 27K. It is a singing and loving movement the likes of which I have never seen before. The space we are in here is the access road/ main road into Ft. Benning. This sea of humanity stretches more than 1/2 mile back, and there are big speaker towers every so often so that people can hear what is happening.

Representative Dennis Kucinich at the SOA Protest

Dennis is a decent fellow. I used to live in Cleveland, and played numerous rallies and events where he and (now Senator) Sherrod Brown were speaking. They are both committed men of tremendous integrity. And it was a pleasure to see Rep. Kucinich again in Georgia. The military helicopters seemed to hover overhead menacingly as Kucinich spoke about his long time passion, the creation of a Department of Peace. Amen. Let it be so in an Obama administration.

The Peace Mime at the End of The Day

JJ 11/07 Ft. Benning, Columbus, GA

The Peace Mime at the End of The Day

This solemn and solitary physical performer was in the crowd all day. I got glimpses of him, and a few good shots hours before and then lost sight of him. As I went to pay my respects at the fence, I saw him one last time as he held up his banner, and then folded it up and walked away, never saying a word to anyone the whole day. For some reason he embodies for me both the party and the funeral aspects of this gathering. The "Wall of Crosses" is about 40-50 yards wide.
